Synopsis
Onboard the U.S.S. Excelsior, Captain Sulu quietly orders Ensign Tuvok to keep tabs on Dr. Rosalind Lear. Sulu is suspicious of Lear’s motives, especially given her efforts to clear Khan’s name. Tuvok is reluctant, uneasy about spying on a fellow Federation officer, but Sulu insists — he wants to understand why Lear is pushing to rehabilitate Khan’s legacy.
Switching back to the primary timeline, tensions deepen between Khan’s people and the enigmatic Elboreans (or “Elbs”). Khan engages in a diplomatic overture with the Elboreans’ leader, Delmonda, over a shared drink. They converse about their mutual pasts — how the Elbs fled a cultural upheaval, giving both sides common ground in exile and displacement. Khan also confesses a deeper skepticism: he tells Marla that “the four most terrifying words in the English language are, ˜We come in peace’.” Marla, already wary of Khan’s mistrust, points out his incapacity to accept altruism without expecting strings attached.
To monitor the Elboreans, Khan assigns Ivan to shadow them as they carve out an underground enclave called the Sunless Sea. Supplies in that subterranean system are finite — estimated to last only five years. Meanwhile, unrest bubbles among the Augments: Joachim feels overshadowed, and Marla becomes emotionally entangled in the unfolding dangers and hopes alike.
A catastrophic incident pushes all tensions over the edge: a cave-in causes Madot to miscarry. Grief, anger, and existential despair pour out — not only from Madot, but also from Marla, who is pregnant and shaken by the cruelty of bringing new life into such a harsh world. In the aftermath, Ivan’s paranoia — fueled by his trauma from Ceti Alpha VI — drives him to cross a line: he kills one of the Elboreans to prove that they are vulnerable. The Elbs retaliate by placing him in a trance, debating his punishment.
Khan and Delmonda argue over Ivan’s fate, but amid the storm comes a startling revelation: the Elboreans have been building an escape craft, and Khan initially assumes it is for them. Delmonda surprises him by revealing it’s actually intended for Khan’s people — the Elbs are offering Khan the means to leave. This generosity leaves Khan speechless, forcing him to grapple with the sincerity of the alliance.
Back in 2296, Lear confronts Tuvok about his clandestine monitoring of her. Under pressure, Lear drops a bombshell: Delmonda was the source who leaked the McGivers’ logs to her, facilitating her investigation. In that moment, many questions ignite: Why would Delmonda side with Lear? What connection exists between these timelines? How did Delmonda escape Ceti Alpha V? And where does Marla — or the fates of other Elbs — fit into this deeper puzzle?
