Synopsis
Several Starfleet cadets take part in a simulation drill with Murf. However, they’re interrupted by an Orion officer who hands Murf a PADD. It plays a message of summons from Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway. Elsewhere at Starfleet HQ in San Francisco, Rok-Tahk gives a speech about preventing Tribbles from reproducing. She’s interrupted by the same message. Next, a pair of hopefuls discuss the necessity for level-headed engineers. Jankom Pog interrupts them to agree then he receives the same message. Outside, Zero watches two cadets hold hands who reflect on the benefits of having a body. Then they receive the message from Janeway, too. Meanwhile, the absence of Dal R’El is noted in a classroom. He’s outside watching ships fly overhead then he receives the message, too.
Soon Murf, Rok, Jankom, Zero and Dal have gathered outside HQ. A shuttlecraft lands and reveals The Doctor. He introduces himself, citing his experiences on USS Voyager. Because the USS Protostar alums had such a good relationship with Hologram Janeway, The Doctor is hopeful they’ll get along. They all get into the shuttlecraft and take off. En route to the ship, Dal asks about the mission. The Doctor recounts that a wormhole was created by the destruction of the Protostar. Starfleet subsequently received an SOS from Chakotay from Solum, 52 years in the future. In the present day, Gwyndala is traveling to Solum. The Doctor notes that these two Solums are effectively different worlds.
As the shuttlecraft arrives at spacedock, our heroes are awed by the USS Voyager-A. The Doctor explains that the USS Voyager is now a “floating museum”. The Voyager-A is that ship’s successor. On board Voyager-A, The Doctor explains the rest of the fleet is preoccupied with the Romulan evacuation and this is why Janeway was tasked with the mission. Our heroes aren’t the only Starfleet Academy hopefuls aboard Voyager-A. They pass a trio of Nova Squadron candidates in the halls. Dal aspires to join their ranks but Nova Squad is not welcoming. Our heroes encounter Janeway, Tysess and Counselor Noum, who is once again rude to Jankom . However, Jankom maintains his composure. Tysess says Janeway is busy. Noun emphasizes that only officers are allowed on the bridge.
On the bridge, Janeway says she promised Admiral Picard she wouldn’t lose this ship in the Delta Quadrant. The ship departs from spacedock. Meanwhile, The Doctor explains to our heroes that they’ll each be assigned to the division for which they’ve shown aptitude. As they travel to their various destinations, The Doctor explains what makes a turbolift distinct from an elevator. Jankom admires the warp core and quantum slipstream drive in the engineering department. Murf is delighted to find holodecks suited to his security training needs. Zero will be assisting The Doctor in medical. They witness a Bolian giving birth. Rok is assigned to Cetacean Ops. Back in the turbolift, Dal asks The Doctor why they’re needed. The Doctor says the youngsters must be ready in case they are needed. In the meantime, they’ll train.![]()

Dal is underwhelmed to be presented with a stack of assigned reading. The Doctor recommends he begin with Temporal Mechanics 101. Later in the mess hall, Dal expresses his frustration. Rok says they aren’t here for Dal’s “cockamamie” plans. Dal insists Janeway’s behavior is uncharacteristic. He’s unsatisfied. But Rok insists their path forward is to enroll at the Academy. Everyone but Dal excuses themselves from the table. Later, Dal gets in touch with Gwyn. She still hasn’t arrived at Solum, in spite of the considerable travel time. Dal says the rest of the gang loves the new Voyager. But Gwyn senses Dal is unsatisfied. Dal wonders if the Academy isn’t his thing. Gwyn urges him to give it time. Meanwhile, she recounts her mission: to persuade her people to unify rather than succumb to civil war in the wake of First Contact.
Dal questions whether or not achieving this goal will cause Gwyn to cease to exist. She explains that the past is the past, and will remain. Gwyn hopes to create a new, different future. Dal asks about the future of their relationship. However, the transmission is lost before any communication can transpire. In medical, Zero watches the Bolian mother holding the baby. They look at the hands of their containment suit and lament that they can’t feel such a wonderful thing. The Doctor offers them some advice. He says, “In my experience, we all have an opportunity to grow beyond our programming.” Zero hopes this comes to pass.
But The Doctor is summoned to shuttlebay three for “the mission.” He’s awkward about the whole thing. Zero’s interest is piqued. Next, they head to Dal’s quarters. They inform Dal that he was right. There is a secret mission. They deduced this because The Doctor is “a terrible actor”. Zero figured out there was something afoot because Voyager-A is only meant to have 2 shuttlebays, not three.
As Zero and Dal head through the halls, Jankom joins them. Jankom notes the shuttlebay is under restricted access. Dal says they’ll get in through the Jeffries Tubes. But before they can enter, Rok and Murf catch up with them. Rok calls them out for their plan. She says they can’t afford to mess up or break rules anymore. She feels like she belongs in Starfleet and doesn’t want to lose it. But she’s betrayed by Murf, who joins the others in the tubes.
In the tubes, Zero consults a PADD. They say there is not shuttlebay 3, but there is a retrofitted hanger with restricted access. Eventually, they find their destination. However, it appears to be an empty hanger. But when Dal throws a tool in frustration, it hits a cloaked ship. Since cloaked ships are illegal in Starfleet, Jankom wonders: “What’s it doing here?” But the investigation is interrupted by the arrival of Janeway, The Doctor, Noun and Tysess. Noun guesses Admiral Jellico is canceling their covert mission. The Doctor is incredulous. He cites the difficulty in hiding a mission from one’s own crew.
Janeway says she was just informed. She tells the computer to de-cloak the USS Infinity. It looks like the USS Defiant’s nephew, from the brother who married a F-Zero racer. Jellico is worried an unstable wormhole could risk the timeline and cause the loss of more Starfleet officers. Tysess points out how much Chakotay means to Janeway. Meanwhile, our heroes are observing everything from a concealed location on the ceiling. But a drop of drool from Murf threatens to compromise their location.
While their mission is nominally canceled, Janeway promises to keep trying. Tysess then mistakes Murf’s drool puddle for a leak from the Infinity. The Starfleet officers leave the hanger. Dal, Zero, Jankom and Murf realize they intend not just to observe the wormhole, but to traverse it. “And this just got interesting,” Dal says.-geekgirlauthority.com
