Synopsis
On the planet Ysida, on a red island amid a sea of clouds, Chakotay carries out a repetitious daily routine. It involves eating fruit, fishing and carving a chess set depicting the USS Voyager and USS Protostar crews. The serenity is interrupted by the arrival of the cadets. However, Dal R’El, Gwyn, Rok-Tahk, Jankom Pog, Zero, Murf and Maj’el have gotten caught in a net trap. Hologram Janeway appears and asks Chakotay if he knows the intruders. The cadets are delighted to see her, considering she died in Prodigy Season 1’s “Supernova, Part 2.” It is revealed that from Chakotay’s perspective, the events of “Who Saves the Saviors” transpired a decade earlier. Jankom mentions Adreek’hu. Chakotay unceremoniously cuts them down. Maj’el notes that Adreek is a sore subject.
Chakotay realizes the cadets are Starfleet. The cadets explain the time travel paradox situation. Gwyn tells Chakotay they must return the Protostar to Tars Lamora to restore the timeline. But Chakotay says, “No.” He states that they stranded the ship in this remote location to prevent the Living Construct from destroying the Federation. Chakotay insists his ship won’t be leaving. He closes the Protostar’s door against the cadets, urging them to seek shelter from the incoming ion maelstrom. As the cadets build their shelter, they discuss why Chakotay’s such a tarter. Inside the ship, Hologram Janeway says Adreek would have let the cadets in. Chakotay concedes and invites the cadets inside. Dal briefly resists, but everyone else readily accepts. The cadets reintroduce themselves with Hologram Janeway.
Chakotay reveals that the Protostar is in a different state than expected. Previously, Chakotay and Adreek ejected the Protocore and vented the warp drives. Solar panels power the remaining systems still running. Chakotay again emphasizes that they won’t be getting the Protostar off the planet. On the bridge, Zero realizes they’ve marooned themselves, too. Chakotay agrees but declares they’ll get used to it. He says, “The needs of the many outweigh the comfort of a few,” earning a dirty look from Maj’el. Chakotay tells them to find somewhere else on the ship to ride out the storm. Dal has an angry outburst. When Chakotay begins to advance on Dal, Jankom diffuses the tension by distracting Chakotay with his Adreek figure.![]()

Hologram Janeway asks them to forgive him, citing that he’s a captain who has lost his whole crew. She explains that being stranded took its toll on Chakotay and Adreek. Adreek wanted to give Chakotay hope by finding an alternate escape route. He devised a plan to harvest the storm’s antimatter energy to recharge the warp cores. However, when Adreek’hu went searching for an antimatter source during a storm, he never returned. Hologram Janeway tells the cadets she believes their assertion that they’ve known each other for a while. She says Chakotay is an honorable man who has been turned bitter by his scars. Then, she leaves to check on him.
The cadets wonder why Wesley sent them to Ysida if Chakotay can’t be convinced. Jankom floats the idea of stealing the ship. But Gwyn says their mission isn’t just to fix the ship. They’ll also need to fix a captain. The next day, the cadets consistently interrupt Chakotay’s daily routine. Meanwhile, the cadets begin taking part in island life while fixing up the Protostar and its associated vehicles. This includes the Runaway, the six-wheeler from “Dreamcatcher.” One montage later, the Protostar looks like a whole new ship. Later, Dal goes up the hill to harvest plasma fruit. He thinks he’s found a bountiful harvest. But it turns out to be a trap set by a large indigenous creature. Another ion maelstrom arrives. Chakotay says it’s the worst storm he’s seen in years. But then they realize Dal is missing. The ion interference has made comms unusable. Chakotay, Jankom, Gwyn and Murf pile into the Runaway to search for Dal. Meanwhile, Rok, Zero, Maj’el and Hologram Janeway provide support from the Protostar.
Soon, a sand leviathan is stalking the Runaway. Chakotay navigates the Runaway down a cave and activates the vehicle’s hovering capabilities. While they are nearly ejected while evading the leviathan, Murf keeps them in place. Chakotay admires his abilities. Thanks to advice from the Protostar team, the cave team locates Dal. But Dal has located Adreek’s remains. Chakotay kneels before the corpse and then takes his comm badge. He also realizes that Adreek’s plan to harvest antimatter was effective, even if he didn’t survive. The cave team returns to the Protostar. Chakotay gives Hologram Janeway the badge. She observes that Adreek sacrificed himself so Chakotay could live.
Chakotay says he was prepared to live out his life alone on Ysida. However, Adreek and the cadets reminded him: “There’s always another way.” He asks Gwyn to confirm it’s safe to return and that the Protostar is necessary to save others. Later, they bury Adreek’s remains at sea. Gwyn asks Chakotay about Adreek’s plan for the Protostar. Chakotay says Adreek knew that before the ship could fly, it’d have to sail.-geekgirlauthority.com
