Synopsis
The USS Protostar is at Protowarp, heading towards the USS Voyager-A. Present on the bridge are Dal R’El, Gwyn, Jankom Pog, Zero, Murf, Maj’el and Hologram Janeway. Rok plays with Bribble and Murf while the crew discusses the benefits and mechanics of the Protodrive. But when they drop out of Protowarp, there’s an odd flickering. Furthermore, Gwyn’s temporal stabilizer glitches slightly. They’re joined by Chakotay. He’s dressed in his uniform for the first time since the cadets found him. Dal ribs him about trying to impress the real Janeway but Gywn says he looks good. The crew is approved to beam aboard Voyager. Rok asks Janeway to pet-sit Bribble. She then entertains them with a laser pointer.
The cadets beam aboard Voyager and are greeted by The Doctor. He and Chakotay are reunited. But instead of Janeway, the Admiral waiting to greet them is Edward Jellico. He informs them Janeway died in the USS Infinity trying to rescue Chakotay. As The Doctor leads them, the cadets insist they remember events differently. The Doctor believes this is possible and asks about passing through any anomalies. The logs corroborate Janeway’s death. Maj’el concludes they’re on the wrong Voyager. The Doctor says they must be from another dimension. He invites them to visit him in sick bay and leaves. Dimensions
The turbolift is too small to fit everyone. Dal, Gwyn, Chakotay, Jankom, Murf and Maj’el get inside first. But as they head down the shaft, another wave comes over Gwyn. Her stabilizer flickers again, and the numbers on its display change. The turbolift opens on a dark, unkept and debris-strewn corridor. Jankom approves of their letting this deck go. They reach sick bay, but it seems long abandoned. But then they come upon Thadiun Okana. He recognizes them from “Crossroads.” Then he tries to excuse his behavior in “Masquerade.” Okana asks after Rok. Then Gwyn attempts to contact the other two cadets. But Rok and Zero are riding the turbolift and receive no call. The doors open on halls filled with Enderprizians. They’re spotted by Sool’U. He declares Captain Tuvix must be alerted.
Elsewhere, Maj’el concludes they have stepped into a different dimension than Rok and Zero. Dal asks Okana for clarification on an earlier remark about the cadets being “dangerous.” Okana cites the Living Construct. Apparently in this timeline, it was successfully activated and destroyed every Starfleet vessel in the quadrant. Okana is amazed the cadets survived (but odds are their variants from this timeline did not). When Chakotay asks after Janeway, Okana says Voyager was left for scrap.![]()

In the cafeteria, the crew assesses their situation. Maj’el states there’s no reason to assume Rok and Zero aren’t handling the predicament just as well as they are. Dal laments being stuck in an alternate reality with Okana. Okana proposes selling their “vintage Starfleet uniforms” on the black market. Recalling a similar situation, Chakotay says they must understand how this happened if they’re going to fix it. Murf points out the window and draws their attention to a large crack in spacetime. Gwyn reasons that this is the consequence of proto-warping and worsening the paradox created by their failure to return the Protostar to Tars Lamora. They postulate that they’re traversing realities that are informed by the decisions made by our heroes. This is because they created the anomaly, so it’s connected to their quantum signatures.
Maj’el proposes some technobabble. Chakotay agrees. Dal doesn’t know what they’re saying, but likes the way they’re saying it. By fixing the rift with the deflector dish, they’ll be returned to their original reality. But they must make it to the bridge in order to do so. However, the bridge is eight decks above them. Jankom comments that this is a lot of realities therefore Gwyn’s armband might not be able to hack it. But Gwyn insists she can handle 8 levels. Jankom suggests having Okana beam them there as a shortcut.
In the transporter room, Okana is a confused but willing participant. But when our heroes are beamed, flicking once again indicates a misfire. Mirror Janeway enters, and is joined by Mirror Chakotay. Chakotay identifies it as the Mirror Universe. Our heroes are thrown into a brig cell. Chakotay brings them up to speed on the Mirror Universe. Mirror Janeway and Mirror Chakotay enter. Then Mirror Chakotay wonders how our heroes bypassed the Terran preventative measures against intruders from the prime timeline. Mirror Janeway leaves and Mirror Chakotay prepares the agonizer. He resolves to start with “the cute one.” In one of the funniest line readings of the season, Jankom quips, “Oh no. Not the cute one.”
Mirror Chakotay advances on Murf. Murf makes quick work of him. “Never trust the cute ones,” concludes Chakotay. With Mirror Chakotay unconscious, Chakotay steals his uniform and fakes a goatee. Murf also dons a goatee. Their subterfuge fools several crewmembers. When they encounter Mirror Janeway, she questions how interrogated the cadets look. Mirror Janeway orders Gwyn to remove her stabilizer. But this will kill her. Chakotay insists the device is no threat. Mirror Janeway sees through the ruse. Our heroes flee from Mirror Janeway’s phaser blasts. They seek shelter in Cetacean Ops. But Mirror Gillian narcs them out! “All hail the Terran Empire,” declares Mirror Gillian. Mirror Chakotay leads several soldiers into Cetacean Ops. But it’s Mirror Janeway who successfully apprehends him. However, Jankom momentarily traps their adversaries in Cetacean Ops.
Our heroes reach the bridge. Impersonating his Mirror counterpart, Chakotay tells the officers there to defend an endangered Mirror Janeway. They evacuate the bridge. Chakotay orders it to be locked behind them. But through the viewscreen, they see the Loom is entering the Mirror Universe through the spacetime crack. Wes is keeping them away from the prime timeline, but this is the Mirror Universe.
Gwyn recalibrates the shields to slow the Loom’s advance on the ISS Voyager-A. The computer still needs time to process. Mirror Chakotay and Mirror Janeway blast through the bridge door. Chakotay says no one will survive if Mirror Janeway stops him. He says no matter what reality they’re in, he could never hurt Janeway. Mirror Janeway asks about the Loom. But our heroes insist they can fix it, allowing both their realities to continue to exist. The Loom’s arrival is imminent. But Mirror Janeway repels them with the ship’s phasers. The Loom are arriving on the bridge. Time begins to slow. But Gwyn’s stabilizer keeps her unfrozen. She leaps towards the control panel in spite of the presence of the Loom. With the deflector activated, all of our heroes are returned to Voyager’s transporter room in the prime timeline. Zero says they were just getting used to Tuvix’s Talaxian-Vulcan fusion cuisine.
The Doctor warmly greets the cadets and Chakotay. Then Janeway arrives. She laughs at Chakotay’s fake goatee. They embrace. The cadets and Janeway’s command crew look on with approval. Counselor Noum is amazed they visited the Mirror Universe. “Whatever our reality throws at us, I’m glad I’m in this one with you,” Dal says to Gwyn. She agrees.-geekgirlauthority.com
